چکیده
The thermodynamics of the diffuse, X-ray emitting gas in clusters and groups of galaxies are affected by a certain amount of non–gravitational energy input, as indicated by the scaling properties of X–ray halos. Such a view has been recently confirmed by the detection of an excess entropy in the center of groups. It is not easy, however, to identify unambiguously the source and the epoch of such excess entropy. Here we show that the observations of high z clusters will help in reconstructing both the dynamic and the thermodynamic history of the diffuse cosmic baryons.

Four Soft Gamma Repeaters (SGRs) have now been identified with certainty, and a fifth has possibly been detected. I will review their X-ray and gamma-ray properties in both outburst and quiescence. The magnetar model accounts fairly well for the observations of SGR1806-20 and SGR1900+14, but data are still lacking for SGR1627-41 and SGR0525-66. The locations of the SGRs with respect to their su...

We report on the progress of our search for serendipitous distant X-ray galaxy clusters in the ROSAT PSPC pointed observations archive. The initial aim of our work is to measure the X-ray luminosity function of clusters down to f lim = 4×10 −14 erg cm −2 s −1 and so test the claims of cluster evolution at moderate redshifts. We have R band images and spectroscopy for 45 extended sources detecte...

In the summer of the year 2000, a NASA Small Explorer satellite, the High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (HESSI), will be launched. It will consist of nine large, coaxial germanium detectors viewing the Sun through a set of Rotation Modulation Collimators and will accomplish high-resolution imaging and spectroscopy of solar flares in the x-ray and gamma-ray bands. Here we describe some of th...
